Music of Nepal - workshops with Night / Jam Session

Night members have been travelling around Himalayan villages for years with enthusiasm collecting stories, songs in many languages and dialects, saving instruments and melodies from oblivion. During the meeting with the audience, they will share their experiences and present their discoveries along with a short history of selected instruments, their construction and techniques of sound production.
Those who prefer vocal art will be able to learn Nepalese songs. Please feel free to bring your own instruments. At the end of the workshop, there will be a Polish-Nepalese jam session.
The meeting will be held in English.

Ten thousand spirits: the intriguing world of Korean shamanism. Lecture by Justyna Najbar-Miller, PhD

The Korean shamanistic pantheon consists of ten thousand deities and spirits on whose favor human affairs depend. Mudang shamans and paksu shamans play the role of intermediaries between the earthly world and the supernatural world. The lecture will discuss the most popular deities, the functions performed by Korean shamans, as well as the types and components of wrought-iron rituals.
Justyna Najbar-Miller - an employee of the Korean Studies Department of the University of Warsaw, PhD in literary studies. Her research interests include Korean religions, Korean prose and literary translation.
Music of Korean shamans - workshops with Unsounded Sound Project

In Korea, female "mudang" and male "paksu" shamans play the role of intermediaries between the Earth's world and the supernatural world. Their task is to maintain harmony between the world of spirits and people through rituals called "kut". These are, amongst others, ceremonies devoted to the dead, during which souls are sent back to the afterlife or helped in establishing appropriate connections in that world. There are also marriages of souls who did not manage to get married during their lifetime. Moreover, the wrought iron is made with the intention of patients with physical or mental problems, or in order to ensure their well-being.
Korean shamans also act as advisors. They predict the future, interpret dreams and choose the right place to build a house or a burial place. If necessary, they can also identify successful days for important projects such as a wedding or moving house.
The workshop with the Unsounded Sound Project team is an introduction to issues related to Koran shamanism. Presentation of the shamanic costume and the most important components of the "kut" ritual. Learning rhythms accompanying shamanic songs and shouts and other vocal elements of the ritual.

For over 50 years, Japan has been developing an extremely creative and diverse alternative-experimental scene, known for its unconventional approach to Western music canons. We will look at what has changed in the last two decades, presenting selected young artists whose music transcends established conventions and destroys aesthetic norms. We will also consider to what extent their approach and achievements differ from those of their predecessors. We will talk about experiments with Vocaloid, unusual applications of traditional instruments, deconstructions of pop culture, flirts of electronics with Japanese folklore, and other peculiar phenomena, thanks to which Japanese music still surprises us.
Mariusz Herma - journalist of the Polityka weekly and founder of the Beehype service, which associates about 100 music journalists from all over the world; he writes and talks about Japanese culture.
Artur Szarecki - a researcher of contemporary culture cooperating with the University of Warsaw, for several years has been publishing texts on music in various digital media; he is passionate about Japanese culture.
